Science Fair Winners Announced

March 19, 2020

The 2020 Science fair winners are in! This year's fair had a wonderful representation of young scholars' work despite San Benito's precautionary shelter-in-place order. When it was all said and done there were 256 complete entries from 12 different schools!  Reacting quickly to the ever-evolving coronavirus, the County Office of Education quickly implemented a change in submission criteria and accommodated participant entries via email.  This new digital science fair managed to draw an impressive number of participants from students in grades 4 through 8. Well done San Benito!

A list of the winners can be found here.

Trophies and awards will be made available to school administrators Friday, March 27th. Please coordinate with your school administrator for pick-up.

Congratulations to our winners and thank you to everyone who participated!

Coronavirus Resources for Parents

March 14, 2020

San Benito County Office of Education continues to communicate with county, state and federal agencies to provide guidance to parents about the coronavirus (COVID-19).  At this time schools in San Benito County will be closed Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20.  School breakfast and lunch for students participating in the free and reduced price lunch program will be available each day.  Please contact your child's district for specific information about how to pick up breakfast and lunch.

While most of the people sickened with COVID-19 have been older adults, we are working with state and county agencies to establish protocols for schools and to prepare for disruptions that could result from a possible outbreak in our region.

Links to information and recommendations for parents are listed below:

Corona Virus Information

March 09, 2020

The San Benito County Office of Education is working with other local and state agencies to closely monitor the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.

You may be aware that the disease has spread to other countries and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) continues to issue new travel warnings. Details about these warnings can be found on the CDC website.

The CDC also recently shared that the coronavirus almost certainly will begin spreading in communities in the United States, and Americans should begin preparations now.  We are working with county school and health officials to establish protocols for schools in the event that coronavirus does spread in San Benito County.  Additional Information can be found on the CDC website and in the documents below:

As a reminder, if your child is sick, please keep them home from school. To help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including the coronavirus and flu, follow these important tips:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Individuals with chronic health issues and/or individuals experiencing severe symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.
  • Get vaccinated every year

Additionally, the California Department of Public Health does not recommend the use of face masks for general prevention and says that handwashing provides better protection from infectious diseases.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide information as it comes available.
