Summer F2B Reading Challenge Winners

Announces 2022 Summer Reading Challenge Results

 

San Benito County Superintendent of Schools, Krystal Lomanto is excited to announce the results of our 2022 Summer Reading Challenge!  Between May 1 and July 31, students across the county read 4,958,447 words and 7,724 books.  They also wrote 9,178 books! Fifty-two students met and exceeded the 25,000 word challenge individually.

Superintendent Lomanto is also excited to announce that 2 students across the county met and exceeded the 100,000 word challenge individually.

Charlotte Ridlon, who just finished Kindergarten at San Juan Elementary School, was the top reader in the county. Charlotte read a total of 124,238 words.  Alexander Pola, also a Kindergartner last year at Rancho Santana Elementary School, was a close second, reading 120, 339 words. Students at San Juan Elementary School read the most words over the summer-a whopping 1,071,082 words! Congratulations! Superintendent Lomanto will be providing special recognition to the students who read during the summer as well as recognizing San Juan elementary School for winning the school challenge.

The San Benito County Office of Education “Building Bridges 2 Literacy” initiative that was launched in 2016, partnered with Footsteps2Brilliance. The FREE App offers books, games and activities in English and Spanish for children from birth to 3rd grade. Footsteps2Brilliance features pre-reading, learn-to-read and general reading programs, as well as newly added science activities.  The program can be downloaded on any electronic device and once downloaded, no internet connection is needed.

Congratulations to everyone who participated and best of luck to students with the upcoming Fall Reading Challenge which begins September 22, 2021. Click here for a complete list of students who met the 25,000 word challenge and the school they attended last year.

Science and STEAM Expo Winners

March 23, 2022

Science Fair and STEAM Expo Winners

March 16, 2022, marked San Benito County Office of Education's Annual STEAM Expo. The Expo, which celebrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, gave students across the county the opportunity to enter science projects, STEAM projects and artwork. Visitors to the Expo were able to see live performances and demonstrations, participate in interactive arts experiences and take part in the STEAM Maker Mobile sponsored by RAFT. 

Over 290 students entered Science and STEAM Projects in 6 different categories.  Congratulations to the Overall Science Project Award Winner, Kendyl Gamble and to the San Bento High School Robotics Club who was recognized as the Overall STEAM Project winner.  In addition, five students are eligible to enter their Science Projects in the California State Science & Engineering Fair April 12 in Los Angeles.

Thank you to the San Benito County Arts Council and Veteran’s Memorial Building staff for partnering with San Benito County Office of Education on the SBC STEAM Expo.  We would also like to thank our sponsors: M & M Farms, Brent Redmond Transportation, Taylor Fresh Foods, Inc., Hollister Elks Lodge #1436 as well as our vendors: RAFT, Recology, Terra Cultura and Integrated Waste Management.
