SBCOE Alternative Education Students Honored
Earlier this spring, students at Pinnacles Community, San Andreas Continuation. and Sana Ana Opportunity School honored Cesar Chavez's contributions to the rights of migrant farmworkers through art and writing. Our students were recognized on April 23, 2024, when Sylvia Chavez Delgado, daughter of Cesar Chavez, and Mickie Luna, president of the Latino Coalition of San Benito County came to the schools to present students with certificates. The recognition not only acknowledged the students' creativity but also highlighted their connection to the struggles and stories within their own families.
The Latino Coalition’s student art contest earlier this spring provided a platform for our students to express themselves and share their unique narratives. In addition to the struggles, many of the pieces depict the strength and pride of migrant farmworkers, as well as the rich, colorful culture they carry with them. The student artwork was also displayed at the San Benito County Office of Education Arts Showcase in April, where one piece was selected as “Women’s Club Favorites”.
These pieces of art serve as a source of pride for students, many of whom come from migrant families themselves. The recognition by Mrs. Delgado and Mrs. Luna affirms the value of their experiences and contributions and was especially meaningful because it occurred on the anniversary of Cesar Chavez's passing, adding a deeper layer of significance to the event.
Krystal Lomanto, County Superintendent of Schools Hosts Thank You Luncheon for Community Partners
On April 24, over 70 community partners gathered for a Thank you Luncheon hosted by County Superintendent of Schools, Krystal Lomanto. The event, which celebrated the many ways the San Benito County community supports education, was held at Paine’s Restaurant in downtown Hollister. During the luncheon, attendees had the opportunity to exchange stories and insights, sharing how they individually contribute to education within the community. Superintendent Lomanto extended her heartfelt gratitude to all community partners, acknowledging that their collective efforts and support of education has strengthened the community. She gave a brief update on several of the initiatives SBCOE staff is currently engaged in to ensure students are successful. In addition, attendees provided input on SBCOE's Strategic Plan.
SBCOE’s current 2019-2024 plan, entitled “Strategies for the Future” is in its final phase, prompting SBCOE to seek input from a variety of educational partners to inform the development of the next five-year blueprint. This spring, Superintendent Lomanto taken a proactive approach, hosting parent town hall meetings and engaging with numerous community organizations to solicit input vital for shaping the future trajectory of educational endeavors in San Benito County.
It is through the collaborative efforts of our committed community members that the education in San Benito County continues to flourish, creating an environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive and succeed. Thank you to all our community organizations that contribute to this success.

The San Benito County Office of Education is committed to supporting San Benito County schools, staff, students and families throughout the emergency response to COVID-19 in California. Since the pandemic began in early 2020, we have learned valuable information about transmission of the disease, which has resulted in improvements to safety protocols and procedures. As a result, we have made revisions to our earlier Reopening Plan for SBCOE Instructional Programs published October 30, 2020. The revised plan is aligned to the California Department of Public Health's COVID-19 and Reopening In-Person Instruction Framework & Public Health Guidance for K-12 Schools in California; California's Blueprint for a Safer Economy and Assembly Bill 86/Senate Bill 86. In addition to the reopening plan, SBCOE has developed and posted its COVID-19 Safety Plan which can be found on our website at www.sbcoe.org.

San Benito County Office of Education and the San Benito County Public Health Department in collaboration with the eleven district superintendents, charter school and private school administrators in San Benito County have developed the Reopening of San Benito County TK-12 Schools. This document is designed to assist in planning for the safer reopening of schools in San Benito County for the 2020-2021 school year. Although schools may begin the school year with a Distance Learning model, we recognize the importance of returning students to school campuses for in-person instruction, as well as the overarching need to protect the health and safety of our students, school staff, and broader community. The goal of this document is to help schools plan for and implement measures to reduce COVID-19 transmission in the school setting, while meeting the educational needs of all students. This document is intended to be applicable to all TK-12 schools, public or private, throughout San Benito County.
